Writing
Writing is an exciting part of a child’s education at Heathmere. At Heathmere, our children are taught to write for a range of purposes and audiences in a variety of contexts and genres. Parents can help to support their child’s writing by talking to them about the writing skills they are learning in school.
Our Literacy writing lessons are based on our ‘Core Texts’ which change each term and are carefully mapped out to expose our children to a range of genres. In EYFS, we use the ‘Free Drawing’ and ‘Free Writing’ approach to teach children the foundations of writing. In KS1 and KS2, we use a range of strategies to teach children the National Curriculum Programme of Study for their year group. Our Literacy writing outcomes have been carefully mapped out to ensure children learn to write in a range of genres throughout their time at Heathmere.

Handwriting
At Heathmere we follow the ‘Nelson Handwriting’ programme. In EYFS – Year 3, children practice their handwriting 5x per week before their daily Literacy lesson. In Year 4 – Year 6, children practice their handwriting 3x per week before their Literacy lesson for that day.
Spelling
In EYFS and KS1, we follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics programme. Phonics is taught daily in EYFS and KS1. In KS2, we follow the ‘No Nonsense Spelling’ programme. Spelling is taught 2/3x per week in KS2 and children are tested on their ‘weekly spellings’ every week. Our children are given 8 spellings to practice at home each week; these spellings will match the spelling pattern they are currently learning in school and should be practiced daily, at home, in preparation for their weekly spelling test.
